CITGO Promises To Continue Rehabilitation of Refinery

A few weeks ago, representatives of CITGO announced that they were slowing down the rehabilitation of the refinery due to sanctions by the US Government.

They were on the island this week to discuss a possible restart of the project.

During a meeting with the Prime Minister of Aruba, and the Director of RDA (refineria di Aruba), representatives of CITGO promised to continue the rehabilitation project.

This will be executed with a new plan and strategy.

A major issue for the project was financing, mainly because of the US sanctions imposed on the company. However, they promised to find financing to continue the rehabilitation of the refinery.

According to one of the contractors in charge of constructing a mancamp for expats, they haven’t received in arrear payments from CITGO yet.

They are not so sure about CITGO’s claim to continue with the refinery.

Marine Park Soon A Reality in Aruba

Minister of infrastructure announced that the long awaited Aruba Marine Park will be a reality soon.

The marine park is a selection of areas under water that are going to be protected by law, in order to conserve and protect its marine life. It will be runned by a foundation that is independent from the Aruban Government.

It’s a project that’s been in the pipeline for several years, according to the minister of tourism. But due to unfortunate circumstances, the marine park project was halted, until now.

More Freedom & Flexibility for Medical Graduates in Aruba

Medical school graduates from the Caribbean, Latin America and other regions may soon practice medicine on the island.

This was confirmed by the minister of health during a press conference this week. However, before this becomes a reality, a change needs to take place within the BIG register in Aruba.

Better known as AruBIG, it’s a registration system, that prevents medics to work on the island if they are not registered in The Netherlands.

The BIG register functions as a way to guarantee a high quality of medical service on the island, compared to the Dutch medical standard. But, with the new changes that will take place within AruBIG, it will give the island more freedom and flexibility to employ medics.

This presents opportunities for those who practice medicine and always wanted to work in Aruba.

Official news will be announced by the health minister, after changes within AruBIG are complete.

Justice Minister Passes Law To Authorize Police To Control illegals

According to the Minister of Justice, this is a necessary tool for the police, to control our borders, and protect the island from undesired visitors.

Future Tourism Developments

Tourism minister updates the public with projects and developments that will take place in the near future.

Due to the current state of the economy, the majority of the local community is against developments of new hotels on the island. However, tourism minister is focused on producing income for the government, and thinks it’s important to introduce tourism developments that will increase the quality of hospitality in Aruba.

The government will announce the upcoming tourism projects that will start soon.

One of the projects that will be introduced in the near future is near Bushiri beach, which was recently made clear of the old building that use to function as a hotel and culinary art school decades ago. According to the tourism minister, investors who want to develop this piece of land, must consider projects that will benefit the community and travelers, this counts from bushiri beach until tamarijn druif beach.

Another project that is within the vision of the tourism minister is, isla di oro.

This project entails a 60 over water bungalow style resort in the middle of the mangroves near Pos Chiquito and Savaneta.

There’s also 2 different petitions by investors to build all inclusive hotels in San Nicolas. But there’s also investors who want to invest into boutique hotel in this area, with about 900 rooms. This type of project will compliment the fast ferry project announced by the government.

More Information About Developments at Isla di Oro

As long as the “zoning policy” better known as the ROP “ruimte ontwikkelings plan” doesn’t change, project isla di oro cannot proceed. This was confirmed by one of the investors and the tourism minister.

However, the tourism minister and infrastructure minister, who is in charge of the zoning policy, confirmed that the ROP is in process of being adapted.

It’s not certain when the ROP will be changed, but it will be sooner than later, according to one of the investors.

Besides the ROP that needs to be changed, there’s several NGOs that are opposed to the project.

Isla di Oro project was approved by the previous government, and the current government, which is a coalition of three different parties (AVP, POR & RED) also approve of the project.

The official name of the project at isla di oro is Zoëtry.

Zoëtry Isla di Oro will be an oasis and one of the only resorts in the Caribbean offering over-water suites.

Here’s a model of the upcoming project…

news-updates-in-aruba

This is how the over water resort will look like.

According to the investors, the project is environmental friendly and is destined to be a eco friendly tourism project. Tourism and infrastructure minister promises that if the project continues, it will do so only if it is approved by international regulations, and has to withhold to environmental regulations. This means protection for the mangroves in the area.

The project should be completed within two years after successfully changing the ROP, according to investors of this project.

Not everyone is happy with the project, because NGOs are of the opinion that the area is protected wetland, and construction is prohibited.

President of Aruba Birdlife Conservation is ready to take the investors to court, if necessary. Even if it has to be dealt with internationally, in order to stop the project from proceeding.

Another NGO called “Arubian Warrior” protested against the project with a demonstration on April 2, 2018 in front of the entrance at isla di oro.

Whether the project will continue lies on the changing of the ROP and manifestations of the NGO’s.

Green Light For CITGO: Resume Rehabilitation

Prime minister of Aruba discussed the situation of the rehabilitation of the refinery on a popular morning radio show, after a meeting with representatives of CITGO.

According to the prime minister, the contract between CITGO is clear and there’s no room for error on their part moving forward, which can cause millions of dollars of fees.

The contract between Aruba and CITGO prevents the island to be jeopardized in any case the investors decide to abandon ship.

CITGO has been complying with the tax payments to the government since the start of the project, even until now, despite the refinery not being operational.

The prime minister also shared the good news during a press conference that a slowdown of the rehabilitation of the refinery is no longer effective.

Representatives of CITGO confirmed to have the necessary funds to proceed with the rehabilitation of the refinery within a short period of time.

Transport Between ABC Island & Venezuela Possible Again

Minister of foreign affairs in Venezuela confirmed that the ban on commercial communication between ABC islands and Venezuela has been lifted.

The ban was implemented during the first week of January, and was in working for over a month. It affected the importation of fruits and vegetables for local markets on the island.

From now on the Aruban government will be exercising stricter border controls between Venezuela, and products imported from the neighboring country will only be allowed if they are certified.

Caribbean Wave Tsunami Training

Aruba’s local department of crisis management and disaster relief participated in a tsunami test drill on March 15, 2018 as part of a Tsunami Warning Program by CaribeWave.

The tsunami alert wasn’t only simulated in Aruba, but  in the entire Caribbean area.

The main purpose of the training is to identify and mitigate the danger of a tsunami in Aruba. And also to improve the effectiveness of the Tsunami warning training system along the Aruban coast.

This provides an opportunity for families, organization, hotels, and schools to test their lines of communications and review their emergency response procedures.

A total of three different scenarios were simulated in the Caribbean region. Each country had to choose the one that fits their objectives the best.

The first scenario was a magnitude 8.6 earthquake in Barbados. The second scenario an 8.1 magnitude earthquake in Colombia. And the third scenario was a magnitude 7.6 earthquake in Puerto Rico.

Aruba exercised a fictitious 8.6 earthquake on the Richter scale on the coast of Barbados, which caused a fictional tsunami east of Barbados that will reach all the Caribbean islands and the coast of South America.

A total of 34 organizations agreed to participate in the test drill. They had to time how long it took them to evacuate the entire building and move as quick as possible to an agreed upon meeting point.

The simulation started on 10:00 AM.

Everyone received a sms on their phone saying “ TEST ALERT / DRILL SIMULACION: Alert for Aruba – Go to higher grounds / Alerta pa calamidad Aruba – Busca un tereno mas eleva of halto”

Aruba doesn’t have a central alarming system, so the department of crisis management and disaster relief used social media, TV, radio, and sms to warn the community.

Radio hosts informed drivers to flash their lights and honk their horns in order to warn people in traffic about the “tsunami”.

The department of crisis management and disaster relief will evaluate the preparedness response to a tsunami for all the companies who participated in the test drill and the rest of the community.

History of Tsunami in Aruba

Aruba never received an official tsunami warning. However, the island does get warnings for tsunamis in the Caribbean region, but the island was never affected by them.

According to the director of the department of crisis management and disaster relief, Aruba is geographically located outside of where tsunamis usually happen. But in the worse case scenario that Aruba gets affected by a tsunami in the Caribbean region, waves will be about 3 to 9 meters high, according to simulations by the local meteorology department.

In this scenario, the department of crisis management and disaster relief advises to go 2 kilometers or more away from the beach coasts and you should be in a safe zone.

They recommends locals and visitors to download the ALERT FM app.

It’s an app  used to send out emergency alerts in Aruba.

The entire island celebrates national flag & anthem day on March 18, 2018.

Gilberto Croes, better known as “Betico Croes” was a political activist that obtained status aparte for Aruba as of January 1, 1986.

The Aruban flag and national anthem (named Aruba dushi Tera) was inaugurated on March 18, 1976.

Aruba Dushi Tera means “sweet island of Aruba” in English.

The Aruban Flag

The Aruban flag has 4 colors: yellow, blue, white and red.

Here a picture of the Aruban flag…

current events in Aruba

The Aruban flag!

The colors and symbols have a special meaning…

Blue represents the beautiful ocean that surrounds the island.

The four-pointed star represents a compass, and shows the 4 coasts which forms a natural barrier from the ocean.

The white border on the star symbolizes the white beach sand found in Aruba.

Red is the love that locals have on the island and also represents the Indians who lived on the island and lost their lives trying to protect it from intruders back then.

The yellow stripes represents the status aparte of Aruba.

Two stripes are separated representing the islands independence in the Dutch Kingdom.

Yellow also represents the islands gold industry back then, flora and fauna like the native aloe plant, kibrahacha tree and wanglo.

Events Around the Island A strong sense of pride is displayed each year as locals wear there Aruba designed t-shirts to celebrate flag and anthem day around the island.

There’s different events you can join, from cultural demonstrations at Plaza Betico Croes, featuring beautiful cultural shows by local groups that dance to traditional music such as waltz, tumba, mazurka, danza and folklore.

Then there’s different cultural events with local cuisines, snacks, and beverage. And numerous other activities throughout the island like sporting events and games, face painting, dino jump and garage sales.

Of course restaurants will have many special dishes and prices during this day.

Celebrate national flag and anthem day just like an Aruban if you’re on the island by visiting any of these events.

What’s The Hold Up, CITGO

The rehabilitation of the refinery is still on hold, since the US government imposed sanctions on Maduro and Venezuela.

Representatives of CITGO (Venezuela) already discussed the current situation with the Aruban government. However a meeting with the vice president of the company is still necessary to confirm the holdup or find a way to continue the rehabilitation of the refinery.

Ss long as the US sanctions are still current, CITGO can’t supply any money for the rehabilitation of the refinery.

If they don’t complete the rehabilitation of the refinery as stated in the contract, the contract will go into default. And they would have to dismantle the refinery on own costs, which reportably can cost up to $35.000.000.

More info on the rehabilitation of the refinery will be released at a later date.

New Gasoline Price

Based on the “Platts US Marketscan”(Gulf Coast) the gas prices changed on the island again.

All prices include taxes.

Are you renting a car in Aruba?

Updates About Isla Oro & Bushiri

An over water bungalow style resort was scheduled  to open in 2018, however the project is currently on hold.

Different aspects like NGO’s and permits caused the project to stagnate for over a year.

The minister of tourism recently gave an update about the project.

According to the minister, the project is on hold due to a current space development plan by the government that prohibits construction where the resort wants to be located.

The intention is to construct over 50 over water bungalows on a site located along Aruba’s southwestern coast that includes an expansive mangrove forest and a large crystalline lagoon protected from the sea by a small barrier island and reef.

Unless the minister of infrastructure adapts the spatial development plan, which is easier said than done, the project cannot move forward.

Despite assurance by the owner that the environment will remain untouched by the contractors during construction, many NGOs and local groups are against the project.

Ex-Bushiri Hotel

The old bushiri hotel finally got dismantled.

Years ago the resort was the first hotel school on the island, however, it was closed and left to deteriorate.

Here’s how the bushiri area looks now…

bushiri beach Aruba

This is just beautiful, don’t you agree?

During a poll, people were asked what they would like to see happen with the new area.

Most people voted this area to remain like it is, and be further developed into a public beach, including facilities such as bathrooms for the public.

The necessity for a new hotel is not there, according to the community.

It’s not sure that the boutique hotel will be constructed where the bushiri used to be, however it seems that the boutique hotel is a integral part of the harbor area.

Weekly Aruba News Recap

The entire island is in party mode, because it’s Carnival season.

Until now we’ve crowned our Queen of Carnival, found our Caiso & Soca Monarch, jammed to music and admired plenty of parades through Oranjestad and San Nicolas featuring thousands of participants.

The following weeks will be more of the same celebrations, with the last parades:  2 children’s parades, 2 lighting parades and 2 grand parades and a jouvert morning.

As we’re still enjoying the events, let’s recap the news that made it through the noise of Aruba’s carnival…

Task Force Removes 3 Water Sport Establishments

Last week the government implemented a “3 strikes you’re out” in the beach policy and introduced a new task force to implement the policy.

The decision was made after a conflict between two beach vendors on Palm Beach that got out of hand was caught on video.

Beach policy is not new, it was introduced in 2014, but due to the lack of implementation and enforcement of the policy, the beach vendors made their own laws.

For example, having more chairs, or taking a bigger territory than stated in the beach policy.

Task force is a collaboration between DIP (Department of Infrastructure & Planning), Directie Scheepvaart, DOW and the police.

However, the police are in charge of giving out warnings or closing down beach vendor establishments.

This week they made an unexpected visit at beach vendors on Palm Beach and Eagle Beach.

A total of 42 beach vendor companies were inspected and 37 of them received a “written warning” for failing to comply with regulations in the beach policy. This counts as their first strike, according to the new policy, two more warnings and their establishments get removed from the beach.

The task force closed down 3 of the beach vendors during their control for not having permits.

From now on all vendors must display their permit and regulations for clients to see.

With the introduction of the new task force, the law and order regarding water activities, umbrella and chair renting should be restored on Aruba’s beaches.

Botanic Garden in Aruba

Aruba’s minister of primary sector announced the construction of the islands first Botanical Garden.

The garden is an initiative to conserve, protect, and fortify the evolution of Aruba’s primary sector.

It’s going to be focused on fruits, vegetables and medicinal herbs, which was used to cure diseases by our elders on the island.

Looking back to history, cultivating medicinal herbs and using it for treating disease is part of Aruba’s culture.

The knowledge and skills to grow these native medicinal herbs will be passed onto future generations with the help of this project.

Botanical Garden Aruba  is a collaboration between the government and Santa Rosa, a foundation for agriculture and fishermen.

Santa Rosa also hosts the largest farmers market on the island.

According to the minister, a group of experts will be in charge of planning and structuring the botanic garden. The garden will be constructed at Santa Rosa, which is located close to the popular landmark Hooiberg (Haystack), in the district of Piedra Plat.

The botanic garden is the response to Aruba’s search to be independent for basic food, after the president of Venezuela closed its frontiers to the ABC island (Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao) for commercial communication by air and sea.

Causing shortage of fruits and vegetables at local markets who depend on imported products from Venezuela.

Soon Aruba won’t be dependant on importations of fruits and vegetables anymore. At least more than half of the produce should be made here on the island.

Aruba’s first botanic garden will of course create another “thing to see” on the island, boosting the economy.

There’s already plans of creating an app for the botanical garden, for visitors, enabling you to get the full specifications of the medicinal herbs by a scan of the bar code.

Safest Traffic in Dutch Kingdom

Aruba has the lowest amount of fatal traffic accidents within the Dutch Kingdom in 2017.

This is due to the increase of police on the road, more controls, campaigns by foundations to prevent drunk driving, and traffic safety management to prevent accidents.

For example, a lot of sleeping police and roundabouts have been constructed, which causes a reduction of the velocity. Also a recent ban of driving while using your cell phone was implemented that also increased the safety on the roads.

The traffic in Aruba is very safe, only 2 fatal accidents happened in 2017.

Don’t speed, text and drive, or drive after a few drinks at the restaurant.

Newspaper Aruba Recap

Let’s get started with this weeks recap of Aruba news.

Smart Houses For Sale in Aruba

Aruba has its first smart community of 20 houses.

It’s a residential area serving as a small scale environment with sustainable living conditions to gather knowledge about sustainable energy specific to the Caribbean climate.

The project is fundamental to the development of Aruba, because these houses are a model of how to build greener homes.

All the houses were created with innovative building materials and have top of the line technology installed for sustainable living in Aruba’s climate.

Smart Community is a collaboration between the Government of Aruba, FCCA, Utilities NV, ELMAR, WEB ARUBA NV, SETAR and TNO Caribbean.

Registration already started to own one of these smart homes. However, strict rules apply for signing up –  you have to be a resident in order to qualify.

And you have to be willing to take part in the experiment by monitoring and reporting information about your energy and water consumption.

Extra Flights To Aruba During Winter

Aruba Airport Authority recently announced two new flights to Aruba for the entire winter season.

Both flights are departing once a week, on Saturday, from Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport.

Sun Country is one of the airlines providing these extra flights – the promo is available until April 2018.

The second option is by Delta Airlines, with their promo ending at the end of March 2018.

Windsor Jet Wins General Aviation Bid

Windsor jet management will be taking over the entire operation at the private general aviation terminal.

The concession agreement from the current owners (Universal Aviation Aruba) will terminate on December 31, 2017.

According to the director of UAA, they don’t want to extend the concession, because the business isn’t lucrative anymore. Their primary market was Venezuela, but due to the situation over there, it affected their revenue.

The new owners and staff will start managing the private terminal officially as of January 1, 2018.

They are specialized in chartering jets everywhere in the world with a fleet of 100+ airplanes.

Prohibited Fishing List To Be Revised

A few months ago the department of nature and environment announced a new legislation that prohibits fishermen from catching certain fish species.

The local fishermen didn’t approve of the new list, because it contained fishes that make their bread and butter.

So they protested against the government, asking them not approve of the list.

This happened before elections – now there’s a new government and they have other ideas in regards to this fishing list.

During a press conference the new minister of justice announced that he will revise and amend the list created by the department of nature and environment.

He also shared his plans of creating an electronic permit for people who want to fish with harpoons.

Saving Mangroves in Santo Largo

A few months ago the director of Aruba Bird life Conservation grabbed everyone’s attention by posting a picture of mangroves in a lagoon nearby the area of Savaneta, Santo Largo that were slowly dying off.

The department of public works quickly took notice of this and consulted the University of Wageningen on how to salvage the mangroves.

Research showed that the mangroves were slowly dying, because the salinity in the lagoon was too high.

According to the director of public works, the underground inlet and outlet pipe that supplies fresh sea water to the lagoon was damaged by contractors during a previous roadside construction.

This compromised the circulation of fresh water to the lagoon, causing the salinity to increase and slowly kill the mangroves.

Public works fixed the broken pipe and installed an extra pump to supply fresh sea water in the lagoon.

The department of nature and environment is monitoring the mangroves carefully to save them.

However it will take a few more months before the mangroves are fully restored.

Here’s the picture of the mangroves shared by ABC.

Finding a Solution For Parkietenbos

One of the important tasks of the new minister of environment is to find a solution for Aruba’s landfill known as parkietenbos.

It was created years ago for depositing waste and garbage. However, the place wasn’t managed correctly and is unhealthy for the residents that live close to the landfill.

Historically, landfills have been the most common method of organized waste disposal and remain so in many places around the world. But the minister wants to close down parkietenbos within the next 90 days and find another solution or place to deposit waste.

The minister was handed a report by a research institute in Aruba (TNO) with possible solutions for the rehabilitation of parkietenbos.

A program manager of TNO explained the results of their experiment in the report to the minister and handed the document to him personally during a meeting.

They didn’t explain in details what exactly was in the report.

Hopefully it contains a solution to end the landfill for once and for all or at least make a move into the right direction.

New Changes For Labor in Aruba

The minister of labor wants to implement a few changes in the labor market, which according to him will improve the quality of life, health and security for employees.

For these changes to take effect, the minster has to adapt certain laws in the “Arbo Wet”, which has been unreviewed for over 10 years.

One of his goals is to put an end to employment agencies, known as uitzendbureaus in Aruba.

According to him, these agencies are misusing the labor law that doesn’t benefit the employees.

A person working through an employment agency is only guaranteed a temporary job. If they are lucky, they can land a full time job.

However, these conditions don’t provide a real future for people who look for work at employment agencies. Because they can’t go to the bank to get a loan for a car or a house with a temporary job.

This is unfair for the employees.

Employees have to be granted more possibilities, according to the minister.

“We’re going to finalize this soon, and also introduce a new structure in the salary” said the minister during a press conference.

New Changes For Labor Laws

The department of labor announced a new change in the “ordenanza laboral” as of January 1, 2017.

Ordenanza laboral is a document which stipulates all the laws and protection for employees. For example, the maximum working hours, off days, agreements on overtime, working hours during holidays, vacation days and sick leave to name a few things covered by this document.

The change made in the ordenanza laboral is the factor used to calculate the salaries and the limit of salary that falls under laws of the ordinance.

In 2018, everyone who earns less than $2.346,72 per month or $28.160,64 per year will fall under the protection of the labor ordinance and its laws.

Christmas at Fort Zoutman

The museum of Aruba located at fort zoutman (in the downtown area) will be opening its doors for the first time during Christmas season.

Fort Zoutman is a military fortification built in 1798 by the Dutch army, it is one of the oldest structure on the island.

On December 26, 2017 they will be open from 10 AM until 6 PM.

You are invited to pass by fort zoutman to learn about the history of the island.

There’s also going to be live music by groups singing Christmas carols.

Local artists will be displaying their art to the public – a one of a kind chance to buy an unique art piece made by a local artisan.

And most importantly there’s going to be traditional Christmas snacks and drinks like ayaca, ham di pasco, coecoei, and chuculati pinda.

There’s a lot of events to attend during the holidays on the island.

For example, ice skating at Renaissance marketplace, dining at restaurants with a festive theme, watch decorated houses and so much more exciting events.

So if you’re in Aruba this Christmas, have fun and enjoy the season.

I want to wish you and your family a merry, merry Christmas!

Once a week, on Sundays I publish a recap the news report in Aruba. If this is your first time reading my newsletter – welcome!

News Report in Aruba

Last weeks newsletter was focused on the islands development, this week there’s some exciting news, and special because there’s an amusement park in Aruba for the following months. Keep on reading to find out more about what’s been happening in Aruba.

Coney Island in Aruba

There’s something exciting and fun, perfect for kids (and also for adults that still feel like kids) to do on the island.

It’s an amusement park, known as coney island by the locals.

The owners from the amusement park is are from Venezuela and they travel all over the Caribbean – now they are finally in Aruba.

Last time coney island was in Aruba, is about 2 years ago, back in 2015.

The staff are installing the rides at the moment – this will take about a week!

Coney island is located on L.G Smith Boulevard strip, close to the cruise port.

I spoke to one of the staff members and they informed me that they have over 25 rides. From popular kid rides like merry go rounds, Montana ruso, bumper cars to rides for adults, for example, slingshot, Ferris wheel, revolt (which turns you upside down) and more attractions, they are too much to name!

There’s also going to be popcorn, cotton candy, sweets and treats for children!

If you’re on the island (especially with kids) and are looking for something exciting and different to do, visit the coney island.

It’s truly one of a kind experience on the island, because it’s not everyday that we have a coney island in Aruba!

Commemorative Prikichi Coin

The government declared the “prikichi”,  one of island’s endemic birds as the national bird of Aruba on February 7, 2017.

This week the central bank of Aruba announced that a silver 5 guilder coin commemorative for the prikichi.

Here’s a picture of the new silver coin…

news report in aruba

This is really beautiful.

The prikichi can be found everywhere on the island, especially in the cunucu and mondi ( which mean in the garden and bushes in Papiamento). They are usually with a group. You can recognize them by their beautiful green and yellow feathers (and distinctive chirping noise)

The coins are made from silver and cost $82.00 each. You can buy them at the central bank of Aruba, located on J.E. Irausquin Boulevard 8.

Last Carubbian Festival for 2017

This week was the last edition of Carubbian festival for 2017.

If you’ve been looking forward to visiting Carubbian fest in December, you’re out of luck. Because the last edition for Carubbian 2017 was on November 30.

What’s the carubbian you ask?

It’s one of the best festivals in the district of San Nicolas to mingle with locals, get a feel for Aruba’s culture, taste local food and drinks, hear carnival music and watch musical style shows that depict the history of the Aruba.

The festival is held every Thursday night and promises great ambiance!

Carubbian festival will restart in 2018, the specific date will be announced by the organizers.

Early Bird New Dragon Fly (still.to.do)

If you’re a sushi and Asian cuisine lover, you must try Dragonfly’s new early bird menu.

Their new daily early bird menu consists of a main appetizer (Grouper Butterfly, Mozzarella Salad or Miso Soup), main course (Phad Thai, Green Curry veggies, Chicken teriyaki, Grouper Dragonfly and Mongolian Beef) and for dessert (Vanilla Ice Cream). This menu is available at 4:00 PM – 6:30 PM. The price is $19.75

These specials are worth looking into – Dragonfly is located in Arawak Garden across from the Barceló Resort.

More Hotels on Palm Beach (still to do)

There’s talks of another hotel on the island near the area of palm beach.

And it’s gaining the attention of environmental groups and the government, because is another large resort really necessary on the island?

According to the new minister of tourism, after this year’s election in September 2017, he explained that the hotel was approved by the previous minister in charge of infrastructure, but that he personally doesn’t approve of the project.

The new government wants a balanced expansion of hotels that has a minimal effect on the islands infrastructure, environment and social impact. They are focusing on a different type of niche in tourism by creating small boutique hotels.

It’s not clear what the future holds for this particular lot next to blue residences, because the developers have an agreement with the previous minister. No reaction was given from developers as of yet to the media.

Here’s a picture of the area this “new brand” hotel is going to be built.

Is another hotel needed?

First Flight To Bonaire

It’s official!

Aruba airlines inaugurated their first flight to Bonaire this week, after announcing their inter island flights between Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao two weeks ago.

The members of the press and government were invited on the first flight to our neighboring island Bonaire.

Aruba airlines will fly direct to Bonaire 4 times a week (on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday).

But on Sundays the return flight from Bonaire will be with a stop at Curacao, before going to Aruba.

The airline has better prices to go to Bonaire and Curacao, compared to other companies.

I’ve heard that they will be also opening new flights to Aruba from Minneapolis with Delta Airlines and Sun Country – however, we’re going to have to wait for the official announcement!

Fiesta di Pasco

It’s December, finally!

The new month brings holidays and festive celebrations on the island.

What’s Aruba like in December?

It’s beautiful!

One things that’s tradition on Aruba is decorative Christmas lights, and this year is no different. As the sun makes it way down, homeowners turn on their christmas lights for display.

Not only are houses decorated, but nearly every roundabout on the island has a different Christmas theme decor and lights. The main street are also covered with beautiful christmas lights.

Here’s a picture of a decorated roundabout in the district of Hato.

news report in aruba

Happy holidays!

What should you expect around Christmas season in Aruba?

As we locals say, expect a “fiesta di pasco” with lots of ambiente (which means Christmas party with ambiance, and things to do in English).

There’s going to a bunch of Christmas events around the island, featuring local bands. You will also get to taste traditional foods like ayaca, keshi yena and ham di pasco.

If you’re on the island during the holidays, make sure to visit one of these local Christmas events to experience the most loved seasons.

Christmas Wonderland Marketplace

Believe it or not, Aruba has its own winter wonderland located right at the Renaissance Marketplace in the downtown area.

It’s one of the places you should visit with the family if you’re in Aruba during the holidays.

The wonderland is going to have a merry go round, ice skating rink (yes, ice skating in paradise), face painting, cookie baking and decoration, local bites and drinks and of course entertainment by local bands such as Las Unicas, Grupo di Betico, Tsunami, Le Groove, ‘N Fuzion, Claudius Philips & OREO.

All proceeds during the christmas wonderland will be donated to the mary joan foundation.

The shops, restaurants and bars at the Renaissance marketplace will have specials, so be sure not to miss out on these amazing deals.

The Christmas wonderland is open everyday from 6:00 PM until 10:00 PM.

Renaissance marketplace is located in the downtown area, close to the cruise port.
