If you’ve been to Aruba you know that the sunny weather makes you want a refreshment to cool you down. I like to treat myself a shaved ice during a hot day. And I always go to the one place where has the best and cheapest shaved ice in Aruba.
Try Your First Shaved Ice in Aruba
If you’ve never seen this ice dessert (or tasted) before. It’s a plastic cup filled with shaved ice and flavored syrup. On top has condensed milk for a delicious twist of flavor!
It’s not a regular snow cone.
Because snow cones are made with crushed ice rather than shaved ice.
This cold dessert is poplar among locals and visitors.
My Favorite Place To Buy Shaved Ice in Aruba
I like to buy shaved ice from a friend of mine named Otto.
He owns a refreshment truck located between the airport and surf side beach.
There are other places like Eagle Beach, Baby Beach, Arashi Bay and California Lighthouse that sell shaved ice in Aruba. But, I like his the best!
Otto has different syrup flavors. You can choose grape, cherry, strawberry, or kiwi to name a few flavors. And he has plenty of condensed milk if you want extra.
History of Shaved Ice in Aruba
Shaved ice is said to be from Japan. Now it is popular all over the world especially in Aruba (and the Caribbean). I don’t know much about the history of Japan’s shaved ice.
However, here in Aruba we made shaved ice our own culture. Shaved ice is a must do thing for locals when we spend a day at the beach in Aruba.
So if you decide to buy one ask for it the local way – say you’d like a Raspao (pronounced Ras-Pow).
Tell Otto that Angelo from Vacations By Aruba sent you.
